Agnes even created a scrapbook of photos of dancers. When the Diaghilev Ballets Russes came to Los Angeles, Anna took Agnes and Margaret to see a Saturday matinee and by 1906 she had earned the title of prima ballerina. Pavlova performed across Europe, making occasional appearances with Sergey Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes. Eventually, she formed her own dance company and toured the world, including the United States, presenting ballet performances including pas de deux (duets) with a partner and a corps de ballet (ensemble).

Once home, Agnes was more inspired than ever. She kept the flowers Pavlova had given her for ten years, safely tucked away in a box. It didn’t matter to Agnes when, years later, she learned that Pavlova gave flowers to all the little girls who were brought backstage to meet her. To Agnes, Pavlova was the ambassador for ballet to little girls around the world. As Agnes got older and her own knowledge of ballet increased, she watched Pavlova’s performances with a much more discerning eye. It didn’t matter.

He fit the image exactly: He wore puttees, or leather leggings secured by a strap or catch or by laces, and a beret, and he liked to have on hand the tools of his profession — a megaphone, a viewfinder (for use in choosing a camera lens), and a light meter. He was also a great storyteller and translated that talent to his films. De Mille, born on August 12, 1881, was one of the most successful directors of Hollywood’s early years because — unlike many others — he was able to make the transition from the silent-film era to the era of “talkies,” or films with sound.
