Since nothing is in shape, neither storehouses, nor artillery, nor fortifications, nor timber cut, everything distracts the workmen, who are very few in number. While waiting, the wheat, the grain, and the powders are divided up. The hospital perhaps will not be finished this year. Altogether everything appears to be little advanced. May God grant that the expedition they propose shall succeed. The enemy will be chased away from a post very advantageous to them both for war and as a depot for trade, and especially we shall be rid of great source of embarassment.
For years the government of Canada had considered the destruction of this place, but had never attempted it. Oswego became a troublesome thorn in the flank of New France, an intrusion that could not be endured. In 1756 it was inadequately garrisoned by British and short of supplies, and the little Lake Ontario navy was still largely on the stocks in the shipyard instead of cruising the lake to add security to the important post.
