Many children with AS-HFA display every one of these problems, but often for very different reasons than the child with ADHD. The child with AS-HFA may not seem to listen and may not follow directions because of social deficits and language processing problems. He does not understand the centrality and importance of the human voice and does not orient to it naturally. Similarly, he may interrupt others, have trouble taking turns, and talk too much because of his difficulty reading social situations and knowing what is acceptable behavior in specific situations.

Yet the interventions that help children with these conditions also help those with PDDNOS, so this book will be helpful to parents of children with PDDNOS as well. Is the Diagnosis Accurate? After reading the last few pages, you may wonder what the odds are that your child will be (or has been) diagnosed accurately. Or you may actually have gotten two different labels for your child’s difficulties, as Seth’s mother did, and want to know how to find out which one is right. Depending on how old she is when the regression begins, the little girl with Rett’s disorder may lose specific speech, thinking, and motor skills; if she is young, then her development in these areas plateaus, without her attaining the skills parents expect (pointing, playing with toys, walking, talking, and so on).
